Privacy Policy

Scope

This Privacy Policy applies to the AskBetter browser extension (the "Extension"). By installing or using AskBetter, you agree to this policy.

Data Collection

AskBetter does not collect, store, sell, or transmit personal data to the developer. The Extension does not require accounts, logins, or identity information.

Local Data Storage

AskBetter stores limited data locally in your browser using chrome.storage.local:

• User preferences and settings (provider, model, preset, toggles)
• Your Gemini, OpenAI, and/or Anthropic API keys
• Custom prompt additions
• Draggable button position offsets

This data stays on your device. Remove it by uninstalling the Extension or clearing extension storage in your browser settings.

Prompts, Page Content, and Processing

AskBetter reads prompt text from ChatGPT and Google Gemini input boxes only when you trigger an Optimize action. Text is sent directly from your browser to your chosen AI provider. AskBetter does not route content through any developer-controlled server.

The developer does not access, store, or monitor your prompts, page selections, or AI outputs.

API Keys and Credentials

API keys you enter are stored only in chrome.storage.local on your device. They are accessible only to the extension's background service worker — content scripts and web pages never read them. The developer never receives your keys.

You are responsible for managing and rotating your keys safely with the relevant provider.

Third-Party Services

Third-party AI providers (Google Gemini, OpenAI, Anthropic) are optional and user-configured. Their handling of data is governed by their own privacy policies and terms. The developer is not responsible for third-party data practices.

Permissions

AskBetter requests these browser permissions strictly to enable core features:

• storage — saves your settings and API keys locally.
• activeTab / scripting — injects the Optimize button and reads/writes the prompt input on supported pages when triggered.
• contextMenus — adds the "Re-phrase with AskBetter" right-click action.
• host_permissions — makes direct API calls to Gemini, OpenAI, and Anthropic endpoints from the background worker.

No permissions are used for tracking or advertising.

Analytics and Tracking

AskBetter does not use analytics or tracking tools and does not profile users. No usage events, crash reports, or interaction data are sent anywhere.

Data Security

All data handled by AskBetter remains within the browser environment. Reasonable safeguards are used, but no system can guarantee absolute security.

Children's Privacy

AskBetter does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone, including children.

License and Usage Terms

AskBetter source code is publicly viewable but is not open source under any OSI-approved license. The following apply:

• Permitted: view source, install and use the official release for personal non-commercial purposes, contribute via pull requests to the official repository.
• Prohibited: copying or redistributing source code, creating and distributing derivative works, repackaging or republishing to any store or marketplace, sublicensing, selling, renting, or commercially exploiting the software or any derivative of it.

AI Output Disclaimer

Outputs generated via AskBetter may be inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading. Do not rely on outputs for legal, medical, financial, or other professional advice. You are responsible for verifying outputs before use.

No Warranty

AskBetter is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to fitness for a particular purpose, reliability, accuracy, or availability.

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the developer shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages, including loss of data, loss of profits, business interruption, or reputational harm, arising out of or related to the use of or inability to use AskBetter.

User Responsibility

You are solely responsible for how you use AskBetter, including any prompts, outputs, decisions made based on outputs, and any third-party services you connect or interact with.

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the developer from any claims, damages, liabilities, losses, and expenses (including legal fees) arising out of or related to:

• Your use or misuse of the Extension
• Your violation of any laws or third-party rights
• Your use of third-party AI providers or services

Changes to This Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. Continued use of AskBetter after updates indicates acceptance of the revised policy.
